A Few More Films Worth Adding To Your Lineup

Lesbian Space Princess screens Wednesday 1 July · 3:00pm · Sarah Riley Theatre.

The beauty of a film festival is that you rarely leave talking about only the films you planned to see.

Sometimes it’s the late-night thriller you booked on a whim. Sometimes it’s the strange comedy your friend talked you into. And sometimes it’s the screening you knew absolutely nothing about that ends up becoming your favourite part of the week.

This year’s Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival program is packed with those kinds of discoveries. So if you’re still building your lineup, here are a few more films worth adding to the schedule.

Bunny

Monday 29 June · 9:00pm · Royal Open Air Theatre

One of the boldest films in this year’s lineup, Bunny throws audiences into the ruins of a climate-collapsed Australia where survival and self-discovery collide. Atmospheric, brutal and visually striking, this is late-night festival viewing at its best.

Addition

Wednesday 1 July · 11:00am · Sarah Riley Theatre

Starring Teresa Palmer, Addition follows a woman whose world is held together by numbers, routines and careful control — until an unexpected relationship begins to unravel everything. Quietly emotional and beautifully performed, it’s one of the more intimate films in the program.

Lesbian Space Princess

Wednesday 1 July · 3:00pm · Sarah Riley Theatre

Yes, the title alone deserves your attention. But beyond that, this animated sci-fi comedy has quickly become one of the most talked-about Australian indie films on the festival circuit. Weird, funny and full of personality, it’s exactly the kind of film best experienced with a crowd.

Dead End Drive-In

Friday 3 July · 11:00am · Sarah Riley Theatre

A cult Australian classic that feels perfectly suited to Vision Splendid. Set in a dystopian future where a drive-in cinema becomes a detention camp for society’s outsiders, Dead End Drive-In is loud, chaotic and unmistakably Australian. Watching it in an open-air theatre in Outback Queensland somehow makes complete sense.

First Light

Monday 29 June · 3:00pm · Sarah Riley Theatre

An elderly nun witnesses a tragic accident and begins questioning the institution she has devoted her life to. First Light is thoughtful, tense and deeply human, bringing together moral conflict and emotional storytelling in a way that lingers long after the credits roll.

The Deb

Friday 3 July · 7:00pm · Royal Open Air Theatre

Directed by Rebel Wilson, The Deb takes the chaos of regional debutante balls and turns it into a full-blown musical comedy. Expect awkward teens, small-town drama and plenty of laughs. It’s one of the most fun screenings in the lineup.

Seven Snipers

Friday 3 July · 9:00pm · Royal Open Air Theatre

For audiences chasing something more high-stakes, Seven Snipers delivers a tense Australian thriller led by Radha Mitchell and Tim Roth. Set on a remote Australian farm, it follows a former elite sniper forced into a deadly fight to protect her daughter.

Mother Funkers Go Outback

Saturday 4 July · 11:00am · Sarah Riley Theatre

Part screening, part live event and part filmmaking experiment, this one is uniquely Vision Splendid. Audiences will become the first-ever test audience for the outback mockumentary Mother Funkers Go Outback, complete with live laughs, filmmaker Q&A and a Crack Up Sisters cameo.

More Than Just the Films

Vision Splendid has never really been about rushing from screening to screening ticking titles off a list. It’s about spending a few days in Winton. Wandering between venues. Watching films under enormous skies. Hearing filmmakers speak about their work over breakfast or coffee. Sitting next to strangers who become part of the experience.

This is Australia’s only outback film festival for a reason. The landscape, the people and the atmosphere become part of every screening. So if you’re planning the trip, give yourself time to settle in properly. See something familiar. See something unexpected. Stay for the late-night sessions. Add a documentary, a comedy and something completely unhinged to your schedule.

The best festival lineups are usually the ones with a little bit of everything. Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival runs from 26 June to 4 July in Winton, Outback Queensland.
